Lawrenson Lab
The Lawrenson Laboratory research program focuses on two gynecologic diseases—one rare (ovarian cancer) and one common (endometriosis). Both are unified by shared unmet clinical needs—a need for new biomarkers to aid in diagnosis and a need for new targeted therapeutics to expand options for precision medicine. The Lawrenson Laboratory focuses on studying the features and causes of disrupted gene regulation in these two diseases, and translational opportunities stemming from these insights. We rapidly integrate new next-generation sequence technologies to map genomic, transcriptomic and epigenomic features of normal and diseased tissues to create a holistic picture of gene dysregulation during disease development. Our studies are inspired and supported by our collaborations with clinical faculty within OB/GYN.
The Lawrenson Laboratory is affiliated with the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, Women's Cancer Program and the OB/GYN Divisions of Gynecologic Oncology and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Personal Statement
I have been involved in women’s health research for more than 10 years. In the Lawrenson Lab, a variety of in vitro models, in vivo models, genomic profiling and molecular biology techniques are used to elucidate the function of variants, genes and regulatory elements involved in ovarian cancer and endometriosis development."
Kate Lawrenson, PhD
The Lawrenson Laboratory is studying the following:
- Transcription factor circuitries in ovarian cancer
- Discovering molecular drivers and clinical biomarkers for endometriosis
- Elucidating the function of risk and somatic variants associated with ovarian cancer and endometriosis
- Identifying novel therapeutic approaches for ovarian cancer and endometriosis
